Email Marketing Dying?

Guys i wanted to get into email marketing, and maybe into spamming too, but a friend of mine who has been working on legit Email Marketing told me it's dying. Do you think its worth a try? Or is the market oversaturated? He suggested i enter SEO. Can i get some advice?
