Usually i dont like turn based games, but i enjoyed a short game called Mutant Year Zero.

I would suggest pheonix point. Made by the creators of xcom and is definitely a great game to play. Spent a few hours playing it as it has many fixes that weren't in xcom.

Adter finishing xcom, FTL( Faster than light) was one of my favorite games to play and replay,
Slay the spire was also awesome for me.

Civilization is the obvious one here, but if turn based isn't a necessity, I'd recommend trying out the Paradox franchise. Europa Universalis 4 deals with colonization, the period 1444-1821, Crusader Kings II (free to play as III is in production) deals with from about 720 or so to 1350 if I remember right, absurdly long game and you're focused on your characters, dynasty and expanding it as opposed to just playing as a country. Victoria II runs 1836 to 1936 and deals with African colonization, a very in depth economical system and the web of alliances that preceded WWI.
