Yes it's good to put yourself first everytime , but you can care for other people too sometimes. From my experience I learned I should never give too much importance or attention to persons who are not giving me some of it back, speaking of real world now. If you want respect in life you should offer it , there is a fair trade , otherwise it is literally useless. It really depends on any person and their way of understanding this concept.
