People just keep using it because the general populace does not really care about much or is not very well informed about these sort of things.. Or they just don't really care.
Probably the same as Covid... Being from the USA, I have seen people care less about it and just go on with their lives.. Then post on Facebook when they actually get this or someone they know is affected by it, being all sympathetic... Yes, I have facebook friends like those unfortunately.
