I think desire is there from the fans, it's just the creators are out of ideas or being stifled by profiteering. We've yet to have a modern mmo hit all the right spots for some reason, even though the makers all know the things that the fans want. I guess Ashes of Creation success or failure will be a big point in the genre as FFXIV and WOW can only go on for so long.
Games like WIldstar had so much potential, but they went too far to hardcore, SWTOR forgot it was an MMO and even the money of Amazon cant buy a decent game. I feel like devs are trying to hard when the answer has never changed. We want good PVE, PVP that is fun but doesn't impact those not interested (and a team capable of balancing). Good social systems and crafting. A business model that isn't greedy.
